How to Read Skincare Ingredient Lists In 30 Seconds
A quick disclaimer: I'm not a licensed dermatologist, just a former Sephora skincare consultant and longtime informed consumer. Take this as a helpful starting point, and always do your own research!
Why It Matters
Reading ingredient lists helps you find the best products for your skin and your wallet. Many luxury products are made in the same factories as drugstore ones, you're often paying for packaging and branding, not better ingredients.
It also helps you spot greenwashing. A brand might heavily market a "natural" key ingredient, but if it's buried near the bottom of the list, it's barely in the formula at all.
How to Read the List
Ingredients are listed in descending order: most to least. The first five ingredients have the biggest impact on performance. Anything listed after ingredients like Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Parabens, or Sodium Benzoate is generally below 1% concentration, meaning there's barely any of it in the product.
One loophole: In the US, ingredients under 1% can be listed in any order, so brands sometimes move "hero" ingredients to the top to look more impressive. A good rule of thumb: extracts, essential oils, and fragrances are rarely above 1%.
Also check the open jar symbol on packaging, the number beside it (e.g. 24M) tells you how many months the product is good for after opening.
Best Ingredient Checkers
INCIDecoder — user-friendly, research-backed, rates ingredients as superstar/goodie/icky. Can scan a photo if a product isn't in their database.
Paula's Choice Ingredient Dictionary — rates ingredients poor to best with detailed, sourced descriptions.
EWG Skin Deep — rates products 1 (safest) to 10 (most concerning) and breaks down specific ingredient concerns.
Good Ingredients to Look For
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) — antioxidant, brightening, anti-aging. 5–20% is most effective.
Tocopherol (Vitamin E) — antioxidant, helps protect against environmental stressors.
Hyaluronic Acid — deeply hydrating, holds up to 1,000x its weight in water. Apply on damp skin for best results.
AHAs (Glycolic/Lactic Acid) — chemical exfoliant, improves tone and texture. Wear SPF when using.
BHA/Salicylic Acid — oil-soluble exfoliant that clears inside pores. Great for breakouts and blackheads.
Retinol — anti-aging powerhouse. Start verryy slow and at low concentrations, and make sure you’re using sunscreen during the day. This ingredient is great but can be sensitizing.
Ingredients to Avoid
Denatured/SD Alcohol — stripping and irritating in higher concentrations.
Fragrance/Parfum — can hide thousands of untested chemicals! Common irritant and allergen trigger.
Fragrant Essential Oils — can cause contact dermatitis and photosensitivity (especially citrus oils).
Sulphates (SLS/SLES) — over-strip the skin, leaving it dry and irritated.
Parabens (isobutyl, butyl, isopropyl, propyl) — linked to hormone disruption; can cause skin irritation.
Note: This list doesn't cover all ingredients to avoid during pregnancy — that's a longer conversation!
