Tatcha The Rice Wash Review [In-Depth]
Keep on reading for the full Tatcha The Rice Wash review - this is a refreshing, hydrating, and lightly exfoliating cleanser best for normal/dry skin types!

Quick facts:
Makeup Alley Rating: 5/5 out of 1 review
Formulation: Cruelty-free, oil-free, non-comedogenic and formulated without parabens, synthetic fragrances and sulfate detergents.
Potential irritants: There is fragrance and alcohol added to the product along with potentially 3 other irritants (sodium benzoate, phenoxyethanol, potassium hydroxide). There's also tiny physical exfoliating bits in the facial cleanser, which could also exacerbate sensitive skin.
Texture: This cleanser creates a nice foamy/creamy lather and leaves skin not feeling totally stripped after washing off
Price: 120ml $36 USD, $47 CAD
Where to purchase: Sephora, Tatcha
Scent: There is a light refreshing floral-ish scent
Packaging: The Rice Wash Skin-Softening Cleanser comes in 2 different sizes, 120ml or 240ml. I purchased the travel size in their holiday kit.
Main pros: Good for normal to dry skin, it leaves skin clean but not stripped. It also has fine rice grains to help exfoliate.
Main cons: The product contains fragrance, which could be irritating to some. The exfoliating bits are also too much for daily use (especially around eyes). I found this to be the same with their Deep Cleanse as well.
About The Rice Wash Skin-Softening Cleanser
The Tatcha website notes that this is a gently effective, cream cleanser that washes away daily buildup without stripping skin for a soft, luminous complexion. The cleanser's pH-Neutral Amino Acid Base gently cleanses & balances skin and 96% of subjects felt their skin to be balanced after use. The Japanese Rice Powder softens the skin and boosts luminosity, while Hyaluronic Acid and Okinawa Algae Blend plump skin with hydration. (I can't attest to seeing much of the benefits of the hyaluronic acid or okinawa algae blend, but my skin doesn't feel dry after using this!)

Tatcha The Rice Wash ingredients
We will be breaking down some of the key points below, but you can also read our in-depth guide on how to read skincare ingredient labels to see if the formulation would be right for you.
Aqua/Water/Eau, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Propanediol, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Glycerin, Acrylates Copolymer, Sodium Caproyl Methyltaurate, Coco-Betaine, Parfum/Fragrance, Saccharomyces/Camellia Sinensis Leaf/Cladosiphon Okamuranus/Rice Ferment Filtrate*, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Powder, Chondrus Crispus Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Betaphycus Gelatinum Extract, Lauryl Glucoside, Potassium Hydroxide, Polyquaternium-39, Disodium Edta, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Carbonate, Alcohol TATCHA.com
There are some goodies in here, like their trademark Hadasei-3 (combo of Saccharomyces/Camellia Sinensis Leaf/Cladosiphon Okamuranus/Rice Ferment Filtrate), but sadly there's also the fragrance and alcohol that can be irritating to some. According to INCIDecoder, the rest of the formulation is very low on the irritancy and comedogenicity scores.

How to use
- Begin with wet hands and face.
- Squeeze a dime-sized amount into your palms and rub together to create a creamy foam.
- Gently massage the face avoiding the eye area and rinse thoroughly.
*Definitely avoid the eye area, and while the website notes that this is okay for daily use and some have said this helps to take of their makeup, IMO the rice bits are too exfoliating to use frequently or near my eyes.
Does Tatcha Rice Wash exfoliate?
The Tatcha Rice Wash is a good occasional cleanser that lightly exfoliates the skin. The Japanese Rice Powder in this cleanser is very fine and doesn't feel too gritty as a physical exfoliant.
Does Tatcha Rice Wash remove makeup?
While some have said this does help with removing light makeup, I would recommend only using this as the second step to your double cleansing routine, especially staying away from the delicate eye area.
Is Tatcha Rice Wash good for acne?
Do not use this if you have acne-prone skin or active breakouts! The small physically exfoliating rice bits will irritate your skin. You should opt for a gentle cleanser like the Cera Ve SA cleanser instead (review coming up later)!
Final thoughts
In my opinion, while there are some good ingredients in the Tatcha cleansers, there's still much more gentle and affordable cleansers our there without alcohol and fragrance. I'll be reviewing more options later on the blog as well. For now, if you're looking for something reliable and trusty to help with clearing pores, check out the COSRX pH morning cleanser!
